Helen Erickson, recognized in the advancement of holistic nursing, is known for the theory and paradigm entitled Modeling and Role-Modeling (MRM). This work, personally derived from and tested within her practice, poses that creating or modeling a mirror image of the client’s worldview is essential if nurses aim to facilitate them in acquisition of a healthy sense of affiliated-individuation (A-I). This requires individuals are facilitated to fulfill a role that gives life meaning; a nursing process described as Role-Modeling. Erickson’s career includes clinical service as a staff nurse, consultant and practitioner, all concurrent with positions at The University of Michigan (UM), the University of South Carolina, and The University of Texas at Austin (UT) as educator/administrator. After retirement from UT, she participated in establishing the American Holistic Nurse Credentialing Corporation (AHNCC) and served as Board Chair. Her work has been recognized with awards for teaching at UM and UT; the Holistic Nurse of the Year and Lifetime Achievement Awards, AHNA; Distinguished Alumni Award, UM; Living Legend, UT Health Center, San Antonio; and an Endowed Lectureship on Holistic Nursing at UT Austin. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing and a Founding Member of GAHN, serving as Executive Director since its founding in 2019.
